CAMBODIA

Captivating Cambodia, through its recent trials and tribulations much like Vietnam, 30 odd years ago Cambodia experienced the deformation of a nation. But like most small nations, its managed to rebuild itself and capture the imagination of people worldwide. Its vast low-lying plains, superfluous mountains filled deep with rich, dense forests, the Mekong river swirling through the nations east-central regions with its elevated bed paralleled by natural levees and its grandeur of pagoda temples stretching for miles, this country offers not just the vanity of its beautiful architecture and culture but the realisation of a place where character and humble people are as important.

Angkor Wat

Angkor ceased to be the capital of the Khmer civilization in 1431 but it was never andoned. It has always been a place of worship. It is a holy shrine to millions of Buddhists. A world heritage site, it is not just for its historic value but also for its picturesque and curiosity vale. Angkor Wat, built in the early twelfth century  is just one temple among many spread over a very large area. Two long causeways form the approach, giving you the time to absorb the immense size of the construction.

Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom is nearly 3 kilometres from the entrance to Angkor Wat. A vast city, Angkor Thom was royal city with earliest construction from tenth century. Grander than any European city of the time, the population is estimated to be more than one million people. The royal palace was constructed of wood so only the foundations can be seen today. The Bayon with its over 200 stone faces is in the exact centre of the royal city. The Terraces of the Elephants extends from the Baphoun temple to the terrace of the Leper King.

Siem Reap

The name Siem Reap literally means “Siam Defeated”. These days, however, the only rampaging hordes are the tourists heading to the Angkor Archaeological Park. This once quaint village has become the largest boom town and construction site in Cambodia. It’s quite laid-back and a pleasant place to stay while touring the temples and a nice compromise between observing Cambodian life and enjoying the amenities of modern services and entertainment, thanks to a large expatriate community. The ancient capital of the Khmer Empire, the vast Angkor complex is one of the most beautiful archaeological and architectural sites.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, nestled majestically at the confluence of the two mighty rivers, the Mekong and Tonle Sap, the capital of Cambodia still retains its undeniable charm, with its wide tree-lined boulevard and French colonial buildings. Looking back to the colonial days, Phnom Penh is just a real oasis of peace which is well worth a visit. Phnom Penh retains its former charm as a leafy South East Asian capital with a nice riverside promenade and numerous beautiful Cambodian Buddhist wats, palaces, and other artifacts. A large infrastructure catering to tourists makes it easily accessible, and many consider it to be one of the friendliest capitals in Asia.

Battambang

Battambang, the second largest city of Cambodia, has a particular charm thanks to its colonial buildings and different monuments scattered throughout the city making it a renowned destination. It offers beautiful landscapes and authentic surroundings. Battambang was established as an important trading city with around 2,500 residents in the 18th century. They lived mostly along a single road parallel to the Sangkae River. In 1795 Thailand, then Siam, annexed much of northwestern Cambodia including the province of Battambang and Siem Reap. The Abhaiwongse family (a Khmer family of noble origin) ruled Battambang as governors for the Siamese for six generations until 1907 when the province was ceded to the French to be part of their French Indochina colony.

Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville also known as Kampong Som and its surroundings islands is a perfect stop for a beach holiday. In a land with thousands of years of history, Sihanoukville is a colourful but tragic start. Fifty years ago, a French-Cambodian construction carved a camp out of the jungle and started building the first deep-sea port of a newly independent Cambodia. Named Sihanoukville in 1964 after the ruling prince of Cambodia, the booming port and its golden beaches soon drew Cambodia’s jetsetting elite, spawning the first Angkor Beer brewery and the modernist seven-story Independence Hotel which, claim locals, even played host to Jacqueline Kennedy on her whirlwind tour of Cambodia in 1967.
