Nuwaraeliya

Nuwaraeliya is a misty paradise located in the hill country of Sri Lanka. If you dream of starting your day walking through fog, glittering dew, and blooming flowers. Then there’s no better place in Sri Lanka than Nuwaraeliya. With a cold climate and unique beauty, this area is distinctly different from everywhere else in the country.

With a name that means ‘city of plains’ or ‘city of light,’ Nuwaraeliya is rich with stunning locales. The city itself features many attractive gardens and parks. Including Hakgala botanical gardens, Galway’s Land National Park, Gregory Lake and Park, and Victoria Park. Also providing base for a trip to Horton Plains, which is traditionally known as the ‘world’s end.’ The Plains are a scenic area filled waterfalls with beautiful views. St. Clair’s, Lover’s Leap, Devon, Mohini Falls, and Bomburu Ella Falls are some water queens that can be found there.

Gardens & Waterfalls

The naturally landscaped Hakgala Botanical Gardens is the most popular in the area, displaying a variety of glamorous flowers and trees. Many locals and tourists alike visit the garden often to enjoy a relaxing walk through the flower beds and butterflies. In addition to being a great place for romantic walks and family getaways. The gardens are also a popular place for photoshoots and functions. The best time to visit the garden is March through April when the flowers are in full bloom. During that season, the entire garden looks like a wedding ceremony.

St. Clair’s Falls is not only one of the most beautiful and scenic waterfalls in the area. But the 25.6km journey to the falls from Nuwaraeliya is also very interesting. An excellent place to rest and enjoy a little peace in the cool air is Gregory Park. Featuring a massive lake dotted with benches, boat rides, horse rides and amazing sights.  The area’s largest farm, Ambewela, is also in Nuwaraeliya, anyone visiting can see the milking stations and other production facilities.

Why to visit

One of the most unique characteristics of Nuwaraeliya is the many tea states, fresh vegetables, and fruit cultivations. As well as being known as the ‘hill country,’ this area is also called ‘tea country’. Thanks to the sheer number of tea states present there. Furthermore, the entire city is covered with fresh cultivations of potatoes, carrots, leeks, unions, strawberry, and flowers. All interspersed with the tea bushes on the slopes.

Anyone visiting Nuwaraeliya will enjoy the hospitality of the Sri Lankans throughout their entire journey. A city that is distinctive for comfortable hotels and restaurants, there are innumerable facilities available to aid in your comfort. Along with the refreshing climate, it’s hard to imagine a nicer place to holiday full of nature, food, and drink.

How to get there

The closest railway station to Nuwaraeliya is Nanuoya Station, which is about 10km away. Traveling Colombo to Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) by train allows one to take in stunning views of the country. Certainly an experience of a lifetime. Visitors can also use the bus service or taxi service via Hatton or Kandy.

Nuwaraeliya is an excellent Sri Lankan holiday destination because it can easily reinvigorate those whose lives have gotten monotonous. Far away from dry and hot temperatures, the area is comfortable all day and night long. From flowers and tea estates to mountains and waterfalls, the scenery is sure to melt away the stress of visitors.

There are no words powerful enough to describe the unique beauty of Nuwaraeliya. Yet everybody who visits once will be sure to visit again and again.
