Top 5 Thailand islands

Koh Samet

Koh Samet simply has to make it into the Top 5 Thailand Islands list, for many reasons. A stunning, mostly untouched island with lots of dirt roads squeezed between lush and thick tropical vegetation. With beautiful beaches where you can see some truly spectacular sunsets. It is very popular amongst the Thais, so that should tell you everything you need to know. There is just enough to do to keep you busy, with some great beachside bars and restaurants. Yet quiet enough to give you that relaxing desert-island feel. And one of the wonderful things about Koh Samet is that it only a few hours’ drive from Bangkok.

Koh Chang

Koh Chang is just a bit further along the coast than Samet, a few hours’ drive east. Like Koh Samet, it is generally not on most tourists’ itineraries, with most opting for Phuket or Koh Samui. So you won’t find yourself thronged with tourists and blinded by gaudy neon signs. However, Koh Chang is one of the more developed Thailand islands compared to Samet. With sensational restaurants (including local and western cuisines), winebars and activities, all at very good prices compared to Phuket. If you want to see what a real Thai island is like without the detrimental effects of over-tourism. In summary, Koh Chang should be top of your bucket list.

Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi is a collection of smaller yet stunning Thai islands. You will almost certainly have seen pictures of them in magazines or on a postcard somewhere before. However, Phi Phi islands were decimated in the 2004 tsunami, and are currently feeling the effect of uncontrolled tourism. Therefore a must-see for responsible tourists only. Years of lax tour groups leaving their garbage on the beaches have had a negative impact on the environment. If you make the trip, you will be rewarded with breathtaking natural scenery. Incredible beaches, and picturesque restaurants and bars that look out over the Andaman sea.

Koh Tao

Koh Tao has been a regular stop on the infamous “pancake trail” for many years. Offering cheap bungalows and plenty of nightlife for younger travellers. It also offers some of the best value scuba diving packages anywhere in the world, and for good reason. With the tropical waters surrounding the island are crystal clear and teeming with tropical aquatic wildlife and beautiful coral formations. Unfortunately, tourism on the island has taken a hit recently due to some high-profile crimes. But the island is very safe and should be on every island hopper’s itinerary, particularly if you are considering a dive or two.

Phuket

Phuket is one of Thailand’s largest islands and a thriving holiday destination. Popular with all kinds of travellers from around the globe. It offers western-style mega malls and exquisite restaurants including Michelin rated ones. With a range of different beaches and areas each with a different feel. Phuket has a vast range of accommodation and activities to suit any budget. However is noticeably more expensive than some of the smaller islands. If you want an amazing family holiday, or just want to visit Thailand without sacrificing all the comforts of home. Phuket offers a bustling, teeming tropical Thailand islands holiday experience that you won’t forget.
